Cultural Values and The Giver
Post date: Mar 30, 2014 7:21:21 AM
The Giver is a book about cultural values. The author teachers us how powerful our cultural values by forcing us to look at a community that holds a set of cultural values that ideologically contrast with our own. While in Taiwan we regard the values of freedom of choice and expression and filial piety above almost all things, the community in The Giver sacrifices everything for order and equality. Exploring these values and their effect on our society is important to not only understanding this novel, but also our own daily lives. We looked at the presentation below in class and began the accompanying worksheet (also below). I look forward to seeing everyone's answers next week.
