Wrapping up the Hero's Journey

Post date: Oct 14, 2016 4:25:09 PM

The past few weeks we have continued to discuss and look deeper into the idea of the hero's Journey, the typical plot pattern that so many heroic stories follow from ancient times to today. Our final two assignments on this topic take a look at heroes and their qualities and the Hero's Journey as a whole.

In the Epic Hero assignment, students read an Ancient Greek myth and compare that hero to those of modern tales (like Batman). Students are then asked to identify six shared character traits. the idea is to think critically about the kinds of heroes that we like to read about and why. What do our heroes teach us about us?

In our final assignment for this unit, students will develop a teaching resource for the Hero's Journey. this can be a slideshow, video, or website that will help people learn about the stages and features of The Hero's Journey. The idea is for students to deepen their understanding of the monomyth through the process of having to teach it or tell others about it. I can't wait to see the kids' final products.
